El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a climate phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean that occurs every two to seven years. It is characterized by unusually warm ocean temperatures in the equatorial Pacific, which can lead to extreme weather events around the world. During an El Niño event, the warm water in the eastern Pacific Ocean shifts westward and brings with it heavy rains and flooding to the western Pacific, while the eastern Pacific experiences drought.
